South Denes Energy Zone : Strategic All-Energy Hub
South Denes is home to the Port of East Anglia, Great Yarmouth, and is a principal gateway to the Southern North Sea (SNS), placing it at the operational centre of the UK's offshore gas and wind economies.
Its location within steaming distance of major European ports, and proximity to critical domestic infrastructure at Bacton and Sizewell, underpins its importance. The SNS continues to supply around 1.3 billion cubic feet of gas per day, meeting c.40% of UK demand. This provides vital flexibility to balance renewables and sustains ongoing service demand for South Denes. Equally, the SNS is now one of the world's leading offshore wind (OSW) clusters, with over 10GW of current capacity.
South Denes' deep-water harbour is uniquely suited to handling large offshore components, pre-assembly for future projects, and emerging demand for decommissioning as the earliest OSW turbines reach end of life in coming years alongside gas assets.
Prime location
Great Yarmouth benefits from access to a wider regional network of innovation and growth. The area benefits from recent infrastructure investment; the £121million Herring Bridge which has enhanced transport links directly to the A47.
Yarmouth is 33 minutes by rail to Norwich, the region's largest urban centre, which in turn connects along the A11 corridor to Cambridge, a globally significant hub of science, technology and finance, at the heart of the emerging Oxford to Cambridge Growth Corridor with onward links to London.
Opportunity
The peninsula hosts a prestigious, internationally active cluster including RWE, Equinor, and ASCO, reinforced by Peel Ports' £60 million investment in a new deep-water terminal, strengthening South Denes' global competitiveness.
