Great Yarmouth market projects steps forward

Construction work on the final phases of the transformation of Great Yarmouth's town centre market will begin next week.

Many traders have already moved into the first section of a new more spacious and more accessible six-day market, that replaces a tired 30-year old canopy.

Now construction work is about to begin on the remainder of the market building, which will approximately double the size of the building.

This will see the beginning of construction on the remaining phases of the market building. It will include the use a piling rig, which may cause some noise and vibration to the surrounding area. This work is expected to take few days and be limited to the first week of working.

Council leader Carl Smith and Labour group leader Trevor Wainwright said: "The new market is proving a success with traders and shoppers. We are committed to completing the project and bringing the benefits of a more accessible and more environmentally friendly market to the town.

"We are working with the project team to try to keep disruption to a minimum."

The wider building work will require an underground electricity cable to be moved by UK Power Networks, and the council is currently working with them and its building contractors to plan the overall programme.

The council is also continuing with plans for new paving, seating, and lighting throughout Great Yarmouth town centre, with work expected to start later this year.
