Winter weather guidance

The council provides a number of grit bins for residents to use in various higher risk locations to support community safety including external stairwells, housing with care footpaths and by sheltered housing communal rooms across the borough. In addition significant slopes that are in excess of 20 meters.

During extreme cold weather, our Estate Caretakers support residents when weather forecast is predicted 0 degrees or below by undertaking gritting during business hours subject to available resources.

Please note, even when communal areas are gritted, this does not guarantee that all areas are completely safe or slip-proof.

How to use the grit bin

  • spread a thin layer: use a shovel or scoop to take grit from the bin and spread it evenly
  • work on snow: clear snow before applying grit
  • use a shovel: never use your hands to take grit
  • wear gloves: protect your hands
  • wear high-visibility clothing: especially near roads
  • avoid drains: grit can cause blockages
  • be aware of pets: salt can be harmful if ingested from paws
