He brings a wealth of experience to the role having served on Great Yarmouth Borough Council since 2014. Born and raised in the borough, Councillor Annison represents the Bradwell South and Hopton Ward, where he lives with his partner Sue and family.

He attended Lynn Grove High School in Gorleston and then studied at Bircham Newton Civil Engineering College in King's Lynn and has worked on civil engineering projects across the country. In 2012, he started a successful paving and groundworks business.

As mayor of the borough, Councillor Annison will chair full council meetings and help to raise money for his selected charities. His charities for the civic year are Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Lifeboat, Gorleston's Dusmagrik Young People's Theatre Company, The Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Memory Club and the James Paget Hospital Charity.

The Mayor said: ''I am honoured and so proud to have been elected to this historical role by my fellow councillors and, during my year of office, I hope to promote our great borough and work with everyone to improve what we can achieve into the years ahead.

"My chosen charities are very close to my heart - my family owes everything to our wonderful NHS and its amazing staff, without them I might not have my children. We are truly grateful for their outstanding care over the years.

''Dusmagrik Young People's Theatre Company has done so much in our town. It has helped shape my children into the people they are today, and we are so lucky to have this volunteer-run group in our community.

''The Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Memory Club cares for a member of my family and cared for my late father-in-law. Its dedicated work makes a huge difference to so many people, and I see first-hand the passion and support it provides. And, of course, Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Lifeboat continues to serve us all, with its crew of brave heroes.''

At a meeting of the council on Thursday evening, Councillor Jade Martin, who represents the Central and Northgate Ward - was also elected as Deputy Mayor for the municipal year.

It was also announced that the Mayoress of Great Yarmouth will be Susan Moss. Revd Steve Deall will be the Mayor's Chaplain for the year of office and Charlie Clarke from 901 Marine Cadet Troop will be the Mayor's Cadet.
