Man handed four-month jail sentence after breaching injunction designed to protect residents of Great Yarmouth flats
A man has been sentenced to four months in prison for repeatedly breaching an injunction banning him from a block of flats in Great Yarmouth.
Jefferey Sherratt, 37, of no fixed abode, had the court order imposed on him in October of last year in a move designed to protect residents of the flats following a series of complaints about his anti-social behaviour.
The order prevented Sherratt from entering Hawkins Close and causing harassment, alarm or distress to anyone living at or visiting the address.
However, he repeatedly ignored the order and, following an investigation by Great Yarmouth Borough Council's social landlord team, a fresh prosecution was brought against him.
At a hearing at Norwich County Court in Great Yarmouth, which Sherratt failed to attend, evidence was presented detailing his repeated breaches of the existing order. Recorder Gibbons found him in contempt of court, ordered a warrant for his arrest to be issued and sentenced him to four months in jail.
Councillor Emma Flaxman-Taylor, portfolio holder for Housing, Health and Communities at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: "Our residents deserve neighbourhoods and homes that are safe and welcoming.
''Where there is anti-social behaviour affecting people's quality of life we will always take action against those responsible. This sentence from the courts sends out a clear message that the council will prosecute where appropriate and seek justice.
''The council's social housing team is working hard to safeguard our neighbourhoods and enforcing court orders is an essential part of protecting communities.''
