Visitors and residents invited to explore history of Great Yarmouth borough as Guided Heritage Walks resume

Guided Heritage walks got underway from July 1 through to the end of October, with support from the Go Trade project.

Guided Heritage Walk

Great Yarmouth Borough Council runs a programme of fascinating Guided Heritage Walks every year, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to delve into the borough's rich history.

A full schedule of guided walks was planned for 2020, which unfortunately had to be suspended owing to the pandemic and rules regarding travel and social distancing. Due to the restrictions put in place by the Government, the Guided Heritage Walks were offered online as a virtual experience.

Now back and better than ever, the walks are each led by an official Great Yarmouth Heritage Guide and boast to be one of the most interesting ways to explore the resort.

The carefully curated walks showcase the borough's rich cultural history; from the quayside, to the seaside, from the Roman and medieval military buildings to the cemetery of Great Yarmouth Minster.

Cllr Graham Plant, chairman of the economic development committee, said: "After lockdown and the Government restrictions putting a pause on the Guided Heritage Walks, it's great to see them back on.

"Though the virtual walks were well-received, particularly from those who might not have been able to attend a normal walk, it is fantastic that both residents and visitors can now explore the history of Great Yarmouth on physical walks once again."

Social distancing guidelines will be followed and those attending will be encouraged to use hand sanitiser and wash their hands often.

Tickets must be booked in advance via https://www.visitgreatyarmouth.co.uk/whats-on/guided-heritage-walks or emailing tourism@great-yarmouth.gov.uk. Tickets cost £4.50 for adults, £2 for children, with those under seven years of age able to attend at no cost. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

There are nine walks running regularly:

  • Picture of Yarmouth
  • Medieval Town Wall
  • The Finest Quay in Europe
  • Quayside & Seaside at Gorleston-on-Sea
  • Waterways & Holidays
  • Rows, Fishwives & Red Herrings
  • Gory Stories on a Wicked Walk
  • Sun, Sea, Stars & Circus
  • Gravestones & Tombstones of Great Yarmouth Minster
